Mentor' User Guide

Go to the Mentoring Online home page and click "Members Sign-In". This will open a new window asking for your User ID and password. These will have been given to you by the Mentoring Online coordinator at your school.

After you have filled in your User ID and password and click the "Sign-In" button, you will be taken to the Welcome page.

Here you have the choice of "Assess a Student" or "View Graphs".

Assessing a Student
Press the "Assess a Student" button to choose a student to assess. In the drop down list you will find the names of all the students that you may assess. A student's name will show up in the list only if you have not already completed that students' assessment. You cannot assess one student more than once unless your coordinator has created a new timeframe for the student.

Select the student you wish to assess and press "OK". The assessment questions are in 6 different domains. You can choose which domains you wish to assess by clicking on the box next to the domain, or you can choose "All Domains" to assess all domains at once. You will need at least 30 minutes to complete all the questions - we suggest you only attempt one or two of the six sections at any one time online (10 - 15 minutes).

If you cannot select a domain it means you have already assessed the student for all questions in that domain.

Once you have chosen your domains and clicked "OK", you will be taken into the questions. Statements are displayed on the page, one at a time. Use the boxes to indicate how strongly you think the student you are rating would agree with each statement. Choose your answer and then click the "Next Question" button. You must select an answer to each question.

If at any stage you don't wish to carry on with the questionning process, click the "Clear Results and Exit" button. Your answers will only be recorded at this stage if you have answered a full domain. For instance if you have answered all of Domain A, but you are half way through Domain B, your Domain A answers will be saved, but your Domain B answers will be cleared. When you return to Mentoring Online you will have to re-answer all of the Domain B questions.

When you reach the end of the questions the answers will be recorded. If you exit Mentoring Online at any stage by closing the browser or turning off the computer without either finishing your questions or pressing the "Clear Results and Exit" button then none of your results will be recorded. We recommend that you only exit Mentoring Online by returning to the main menu and selecting the "Sign Out" button.

If you don't use Mentoring Online for more than 15 minutes you will automatically be signed out and, if you are in the middle of answering questions, all your answers will be lost. You should never leave the computer while you are signed in to Mentoring Online.

Result Graphs
Press the "View Charts" button to view results for the students you have rated. You must rate all questions in a domain before you are able to see a students' results for that domain.

A "Standard Chart" displays the results of a single domain at one time. Use the "Next" and "Previous" buttons either side of the domain heading to navigate between the different domains. If you have not rated a student for a particular domain, you won't be able to view the chart for that domain, and it will be skipped over as you move between the domains. If you click on a group of bars for a single indicator on the chart you will be taken to the "Explanations" for that indicator. These are explanations of why a student may have achieved a low score in that indicator. From the "Explanations" screen you can chose the "Strategies" button, which outlines strategies for a low score in that indicator. From the "Explanations" or "Strategies" windows you can navigate to a different Domain or Indicator, or use the "Back to Charts" button to return to the chart. The "List Results" button at the bottom left corner of the chart screen allows you to look at the individual scores for each question.

A "Comparison Chart" allows you to easily compare the results of a student in two different timeframes. Students' names will only appear in the "Comparison Chart" menu if their results are available for more than one timeframe.

You can use the drop down list under each graph to change the timeframe that is displayed. The graph on the right shows the percentage change for the student's rating of him or herself from the first timeframe to the second timeframe. Again, use the "Next" and "Previous" buttons to navigate between different domains.
